Mathew Dolan

“Matthew Dolan, might be from Sydney but his collection was undoubtedly born in the USA: “It’s an investigation into the materiality and mass-consumption of the ‘American Style’ and the means by which specific articles of clothing (jeans, denim jacket, white tee-shirt) exist as cultural signifiers,” said Matthew. Although you don’t need to mention more than “oversized denim” to get our hearts beating, Matthew’s re-purposing of existing garments such as t-shirts and jeans cut up and unraveled to create new textures and patterns is the new American classic. And with textile references dating back to the Colonial period, the collection is a much more compelling take on American History than the class you slept through in high school.”

Fantasma

Undeniably cool, one of my ultimate favorite graduates from this season program.

Initial reaction:

A breath of karate chopping fresh air for Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier’s first season with the label. Their gang of anime gaming girls welcomed a reinvention of samurai and ninja influences, interpreted through the lens of youth culture. Funny, graphic branding mixed with elegant suiting, zig-zag sole moon boots, and handkerchiefs with a Misfits style skeleton smile. In true Marc Jacobs form, a list that reads all wrong but comes out looking extremely cohesive and exciting.

Music:

The theme music from the Alice in Wonderland film. We are so pleased to be down Katie and Luella's rabbit hole.

Set:

A plywood skate park. It still smelled of freshly cut wood.

High note:

Watching Marc Jacobs watch Marc by Marc Jacobs. The designer sat front row with Sofia Coppola, and stood and applauded the ladies when they came out to take a (modest) bow. Backstage, the two were giddy and flushed. Spotting Alexa Chung and Tennessee Thomas, Luella exclaimed, "the girls are here!"

Backstage:

Katie said the moon boots were for "Narc-y girls who stomp around." Marc Jacobs flew to London to see the collection and "took some things out, fiddled around a bit." Luella added that when the two sat down, they realized they had about seven collections they wanted to pursue. We can't wait to see them all.
